Be Ready for Riverview

If you are looking for the ultimate wingshoot, combined with the pinnacle in southern hospitality, then Riverview Plantation offers a refined experience like nowhere else. No matter if you are gearing up for your first quail hunt or are a veteran wingshooter, you will discover a unique and fulfilling experience on our 8,000-plus acres of beauty. And while we offer a pro shop that can outfit any hunter from head to toe, we also like to prepare our guests for the best experience possible.

With that in mind, let’s look at some of the equipment we recommend for any hunter as they undertake the grand tradition of the quail hunt:

Appropriate Layers of Clothing

From crisp mornings to balmy afternoons, you may experience a whole range of temperatures during a day-long shoot. That’s why it’s important to pack layers for the trip, especially items that will wick away moisture. Quail hunts also include plenty of walking, so comfort is essential. Remember: you’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Ear Protection

The safety of our guests, guides, staff, and dogs is our primary concern. With that comes the need to utilize proper eye and ear protection. It’s amazing how the longleaf pines of southwest Georgia amplify echoes and firearm reports. Modern safety products range from simple foam inserts to technologically advanced devices that would put some hearing aids to shame. Whatever you choose, make sure to take comfort into account.

Eye Protection

Sunglasses, prescription glasses, or shooting glasses will keep substances out of your eyes and ensure gunpowder doesn’t alter your ability to focus on shooting birds. Tinted shooting glasses, preferably yellow, allow for enhanced contrast, make lighting seem brighter than it is, and improve your ability to home in on a moving target.

Footwear

Waterproof boots keep your feet dry, keep you moving, and allow you to focus on the birds in front of you without worrying about the soil or mud underneath your feet. Be sure your boots provide ankle support and rise at least to above the ankle. (If you get your boots at our pro shop, we’ll ensure a perfect fit. And a couple of days at Riverview traipsing through the woods will break them in perfectly.)

Gloves

Veteran bird hunters know the value of a good pair of shooting gloves on a chilly morning. That’s because shooting gloves keep your hands clean and somewhat warm, and aren’t thick enough to impede your shooting ability (or the times you need to check your phone). Go with a light glove, typically in leather, sheepskin, goatskin, or deerskin. Make sure they have a snug fit, and bonus points if they’re waterproof.

Leg Coverings

Chaps are a necessary endeavor when hunting southwest Georgia. They protect your legs and ankles from unwanted thickets, briars, and brambles. They help you push through thick growth to get the perfect shot on a covey rise, or to make a quick pursuit at the perfect angle when the dogs are on point and the birds are running.
