Well, praise the Lord and pass the black-eyed peas, we are finally seeing some mornings in the 60’s , and fall is definitely in the air. We are already enjoying some great college football games, and great quail hunting is just around the corner. We have finished manicuring the lodge grounds, and will begin planting and watering our winter grass today around the cottages and grounds.
Moss tells me that the dog conditioning is going well, and those excess pounds of fat accumulated during the summer are melting off with these strenuous two-hour morning work outs along with brush up training. That’s Arabic for getting the attention of a few hardheaded, mostly male, pointers.
Our only concern at the moment is the distinct possibility of a strong tropical low or a hurricane forming in the gulf next week, and heading our way about this time next weekend. We have pecan trees loaded with nuts, and a bunch of acres of soybeans that do not need to be blown down and over. The European model which has been the much more accurate model has the storm coming directly over us this time next week. However, it hasn’t even formed yet, and these things are extremely fickle; so I am going to stay with the philosophy that states, “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”, or as Katie Scarlett O’Hara said it in Southernese in the move, Gone With The Wind, “I will worry about that tomorrow.” If it does hit us, we will have plenty of time to perform a “do over” of our lodge grounds, woods, and roads, but we will not be able to straighten blown over crops back up. While I am desperately trying not to be anxious, I am as nervous as a nun at a pigeon shoot until we can get a better handle on this storm.
This will be a rather short blog as I just wanted to remind anyone who has yet to make a reservation, the phones are ringing daily now that it is officially fall. If you are contemplating a visit and have not made a reservation yet, I would strongly encourage you to give us a call.
Finally, I want to close with a few either thought provoking or funny comments that I have read on the Internet recently:
- ”America is a country who has produced citizens who will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but will not cross the street to vote.” If you are as frustrated and fed up with Washington as I am, just remember that we sent the yoyo’s up there.
- ”You are NOT fat. You are just easier to see.”
- If any of you are spending as much time at pharmacies picking up meds as Martha and I do, you will really like this one.” My pharmacist asked me my birthdate again today. I’m pretty sure that she is going to get me a present.” In case she forgets, my birthday really is tomorrow, but I don’t want to think about it!
I hope y’all have a great weekend, and may all of your favorite football teams win, and may you remember to give us a call for reservations!
