As the old butter commercial once exclaimed, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature”, but it shouldn’t be fair for the capricious lady to fool us also. The last few days down here in South Georgia have felt like an early hint of fall with much lower temperatures and humidity! Alas, Mother Nature is just toying with us as we will soon have temps back near 100 degrees and a temp/humidity index approaching 110 degrees. If someone tells me to ‘Go to Hell’ next week, I figure I will already be half-way there.
However, the cool snap serves as a reminder that fall is just around the corner. Dove season actually opens here in two weeks. Fall is the time of the year when two of my favorite pastimes BOTH start back up- quail hunting season and college football. I don’t want to get my hopes too high, but believe that both Riverview and my beloved Georgia Bulldogs will be ranked number one in their respective leagues!
While I’m not 100% certain about the Georgia Dogs, I can absolutely assure you that the Riverview dogs, guides, cooks, equipment, and woods will all be ready to retain their NUMBER ONE ranking. Last season, our quail edged out our hunters in the final quarter as they became more and more elusive, but I’ve got my money on the hunters this year.
We have removed a few roughs and some escape cover from our little feathered friends in an effort to level the playing field. The only thing that could change that equation would be if some of our hunters failed to show up and show out for the contest. If we don’t already have you penciled in for a starting spot via a reservation, I would encourage you to call soon since available dates begin to be snapped up after Labor Day!
As is my custom, please allow me to close with just a few random thoughts from my weirdly wired brain:
- I’ve finally begun writing my book. So far, I have the pages numbered.
- The more you eat, the harder you are to kidnap. Stay safe and eat more food!
- Most people don’t think I’m as old as I am until they HEAR me stand up.
- And finally this last life’s observation- I sure wish that I could install a flashing warning light on my forehead stating, “WARNING, YOU ARE ABOUT TO EXCEED MY MEDICATION!”
I hope ya’ll have enjoyed a safe and blessed summer. We are looking forward to seeing you back at Riverview before too long. May God bless you!
